ABOUT THE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals
The Charitable Foundation came into being as a consequence of the creation of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 1998, a merger of the St James’s & Seacroft Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with the United Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Following this event the two independent groups of Special Trustees formed a combined Board resulting in the formation of the present organisation in 2000, renamed the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals have a longstanding reputation for research, development and the highest standards of clinical care. The Charitable Foundation is an entirely separate body which exists solely to complement and build upon these activities and manages all the charitable funds that are raised for the benefit of the Leeds hospitals.
Although separate from and independent of the NHS, the Charitable Foundation of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals and its Trustees work very closely with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ Trust and the Leeds University Medical School. Since its creation, the Charitable Foundation has applied increasing sums to improve the environment for patients and staff, as well as financing research, education and training. The exact amounts and purposes to which funds have been put can be seen in the annual reports; the overall annual contribution has grown from £4.8m in 2000/1 to £6.7m in 2004/5. This has been despite an unusually harsh financial climate and is a huge tribute to the efforts of the Charitable Foundation’s staff, volunteers but most of all to public generosity.

Having completed a total audit and reorganisation of the Charitable Foundation’s practices and procedures, the Trustees are now looking to increase their profile and fundraising activities substantially. Major projects are planned for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and the Charitable Foundation plans to complement these by inviting the public to assist them in ensuring that we all have a health facility which ranks with the best, and of which we can be justifiably proud. This website is an important part of the process.
