Safe Hands!

The Leeds Children's Hospital was visited this afternoon by Leeds Rhinos star Adam Cuthbertson, enthusatically accompanied by Ronnie the Rhino and the Giggle Doctors.

They were here supporting the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust's ‪#‎safehands‬ campaign, which is running in the children's hospital this week. They also judged a poster competition, from drawing by patients as well as posed for photos with staff and patients.

You can see more photos from the visit on our Facebook page.

This is the lovely 9 year old Zayna

Her parents noticed she wasn’t progressing physically and mentally at the rate of her peers and became aware that she was disabled and had special needs. They accommodated by getting her into a special school and moving into a more suitable house.

However, things got worse when Zayna was unfortunately diagnosed with kidney disease in January 2010. Drugs failed to help and by October 2012 she had gone into complete Renal failure which meant emergency surgery to implant a central line and being placed on haemodialysis. In June 2013 Zayna was moved onto Perioneal Dialysis so she could have dialysis at home every night for 10 hours. A week after Zayna’s 8th birthday, we are pleased to say that a kidney became available and she was given a successful kidney transplant and therefore a new lease of life!

The family found this a very difficult time and really appreciated the support of the excellent team on the Dialysis Unit. To thank them, and help other children in Zayna’s position, they organised a sponsored walk to raise money for the ward. They managed to raise a fantastic £3,774 which they presented to Nurse Timothy Palk on Ward 10 last week. A big thank you and well done to them!!
